The Peter Maunder Garden Competition

Peter Maunder, who died on the 15th October 2001 aged 75, was an inspirational Chairman, of great distinction for 15 years, of The Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies and subsequently, and until the very end, a very active President. Peter also served on the Executive of The Hampshire Gardens Trust for many years.

The annual Peter Maunder Garden Competition has been held in his memory since 2004. It is open to members of affiliated Horticultural Societies and Garden clubs. There is no limit on the number of gardens each society may enter but all gardens must be planted by the entrants.

Entering the competition presents an ideal opportunity to gain expert opinion and advice to help improve your garden. Cash prizes are awarded for First, Second and Third places. The Veolia Trophy is awarded to the winning Garden Owner.

Competition Rules
Each Society can enter as many gardens as they wish.
The judging criteria are:
1.  Health, vigour, diversity and suitability of plants allowing for difficulty of cultivation (30 points).
2.  Suitability of design to the site with the requirements of household usage and the incorporation of the principles of water and top-soil conservation. (20 points).
3.  Visual impact, harmonious planting, with suitable encouragement for wildlife (20 points).
4.  Maintenance of paths, fences, walls, ponds, structures, hedges, green areas and working areas. These could include patios, natural pools, fruit and vegetable plots and woodland gardens (15 points).
5.  Cultivation, cleanliness and neatness, freedom from pernicious weeds and diseases (15 points).
