Stewarding at our show

Please arrive as close to 8:00am as possible, and bring your Year Book.

Preparation

  •  Should you have your own entries to submit, these can be staged on Friday once spacing is completed or first thing Saturday morning, completing staging by 8.15am.
  • Optional: wearing an HIHS green blouse/shirt or your own green coloured top
  • Arrive on Show Day by 8.00am (or earlier if submitting your own entries), and bring your Year Book.
  • Sign in, collect your name badge and the Steward pack that applies to your class(es) from the Information Table.
  • Health and Safety – familiarise yourself with the Fire Exits in the hall. First Aid will be provided by the First Responders whilst the Show is open to the public, and by Tim Speller prior to that.

Before Judging Starts

  • Check exhibitor’s entries as they are brought to the hall: – do they conform to the Rules? – are they in the right class? – are they displayed in the correct way and are within the permitted size?
  • A Variety Card (for flowers, fruit and veg) should be used if possible.
  • A paper plate should be placed under each pot that may leak water/soil.
  • Make sure all the Entry Cards are displayed correctly so the exhibitor’s name is face down.
  • All cookery items must be covered, we provide covers.
  • After all the exhibits are present in a class, arrange them on the table to fill the space. Do not allow the exhibitors to move anyone else’s entry…. only Stewards are allowed to move entries!
  • At 10.15 ALL EXHIBITORS MUST LEAVE THE HALL
  • At 10.15 come to the Information Table to meet your Judge. The judging starts at 10.30am, you should ensure they have a copy of the Year book or the rules for the classes they are judging and anything else they need.

What to do During Judging

  • It is important not to make any comment about any of the entries unless asked.
  • Judge’s Record Card – Fill in the Entry number for the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd prize winners of each class.
  • The Judge may also award a 4 th , Highly Commended or Commended.
  • (The Judges do not necessarily need to award a 1 st prize, or any prizes at all if they consider the standard is not high enough).
  • Encourage the Judge to write comments about some or all of the entries, using the Comments Cards, and place these beside the Entry Card
  •  When the Judge’s Card is complete, make sure the Judge signs the Card.
  • Turn all the Entry Cards over so the name is visible, and add the 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th , HC or C stickers to the relevant cards.
  • Pass the completed Judge’s Card to the Chief Steward for checking.
  • Tidy the table so it is clean and well organised for the afternoon show.
  • Judging should be complete by 12.00 (some areas will be finished earlier than this)
  • Please offer to escort your Judge to lunch.
