leaves

  • Continue raking up the leaves for making leaf mould.
  • General tidy up.
  • Collect and hang seed heads for Christmas decorations.
  • Add mulch over dormant perennials.

cutting

  • Propagate hardwood cuttings.
  • Plant out winter bedding.
  • Last chance to plant tulip and hyacinth bulbs.
  • Put cloches over mint and parsley to offer late pickings.
  • Force rhubarb and chicory for early picking.
  • Sow cauliflowers, early broad beans and peas.
  • Protect spring vegetables from pigeons.

pruning

  • Best month for hard pruning fruit trees and bushes.
  • Apply grease bands to fruit trees.
  • Light prune roses to prevent wind damage.
  • Bonfire diseased material, saving ash to enrich compost.

lag

  • Lag outdoor taps and service pipes.
  • Clean, sharpen and oil tools for winter storage.
  • Avoid walking across the lawn in frost.

insulate

  • Clean and apply insulation wrap to greenhouse.
  • Lift chrysanthemums and store in cool greenhouse.
  • Move potted herbs into greenhouse to extend cropping.
  • Plant early potatoes in containers in the greenhouse.
  • Sow winter salads in greenhouse.
